The Way to Northwestern Polytechnical University (NPU)
I. A Brief Introduction of NPU
Located in the metropolitan city of Xi’an which enjoys her name as “Oriental Rome”, NPU is a unique university in the People’s Republic of China which develops aeronautics, astronomy and marine science simultaneously. It is multidisciplinary and research-oriented.
The university now has about 25,000 students, including 3,100 PhDs, 6,100 Masters, 15,200 undergraduates and 290 overseas students. So far, this university has been enjoying the fame that the first PhD student in China in 6 fields graduated here. Totally, 34 PhDs or teachers in this university have ever been granted the Humboldt Research Fellowships by Alexander von Humboldt Foundation. Among the graduates, there are more than 30 academicians of the Institute of Science or the Institute of Engineering of China, more than 30 generals and 6 Outstanding Youths of China.
There are 20 schools now which set 54 bachelor programs, 101 master degree programs and 57 Ph.D. programs. 6 national key laboratories, 4 national specialized laboratories, 2 engineering research centers and 26 provincial key laboratories are here.
Since the year 1938 in which the university was set up, it has produced many glorious No. Ones in China. They are as follows:
33 PhDs or professors have won the Humboldt Research Fellowship. This number is the No. One among all Chinese universities.
The No. One no-pilot airplane in China was invented in this university in 1958.
The No. One airborne computer in China was invented in this university in 1974.
The No. One Passive-Active integrated guidance submarine craft in China was invented in this university in 1979.
The No. One High-Speed Wind Tunnel in China was constructed in this university in 1982.
The No. One sound-reduction pool in China was constructed in this university in 1989.
In 1991, 215 excellent students were selected in all Chinese universities. 5 of them were from NPU. This number is the No. One among all Chinese universities.
The No. One large scale integrated circuit specified for aviation was invented in this university in 1991.
The number of published research papers indexed in EI was No. One in China in
the year of 1991 and 1992.
The No. One. Low-speed Wing Model Wind Tunnel in Asia was set up in this
university in 1994.
The university became the No. One No-pilot airplanes research and production
base in 1996.

Brief Introduction to Xi’an
Xi’an, also been called as Chang’an in ancient times, is a world-famous ancient capital city, one of the birthplaces of the Chinese nation, and an ancient city of 3,000 years old history. Starting from the 9th century B.C., 12 dynasties established their capital successively in Xi’an during the period of over 1000 years, and the ancient capital of Xi’an is at the top of the seven ancient capitals in China. As far back as the Western Han Dynasty of more than two thousand years ago, Xi’an was the starting point of the famous “Silk Road” which extended all the way to Rome and was the first city which opened its gate to the world in Chinese history.
The present Xi’an is a developing city with modern industrial foundation and tour facilities. After more than forty years construction, a complete industrial production system has been established in Xi’an. Xi’an is also the major bases of aerospace, electric and machinery manufacturing, textile, and electronic industries and has rather solid strength of modern science and technology. The foundational education and the comprehensive scientific and technological strength of Xi’an are among the best of the large cities in the country. The Xi’an municipal government set up a 20.35 square-km state high tech development region, which is the largest economic and cultural center in Northwest of China.
Xi’an has already had direct trade relation with more than one hundred countries and districts, and has over 180 foreign funded enterprises. Xi’an airport is one of the four largest airports in China with 58 air lines to more than fifty large and medium-sized cities in China and to Hong Kong and Japan. Since reform and opening to the outside world, Xi’an has opened its gate and has become an important inland open city. The investment environment of Xi’an is improving increasingly. The vast amount of relics and historic sites and the fine natural landscape made Xi’an a well-known tourist hot spot in the world.
