Founded in 1980, the Department of Automatic Control of Northwestern Polytechnical University was one of the important bases of NPU to develop key disciplines and advanced technology. In 2003, the Department was renamed to the School of Automation. The School has maintained the highest intellectual standards both in research and teaching ever since its foundation. The School has four departments offering five Bachelor degree programs, fourteen Master degree programs and eight Doctoral degree programs.

The School has incorporated a team of renowned experts in science and technology to form a faculty that is not only highly experienced in education but also well qualified in academic research. Currently there are 119 faculty and staff members in the School. Among them are two members of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, 31 professors, and 32 associate professors. In addition, nine eminent specialists from home or abroad hold concurrent professorship posts in the School. 90% of the faculty and staff are young or middle-aged.

Achievements in Education: The School of Automation has made great progresses in improving the quality of the teaching during the past decades. In 2001, the Control Theory and Engineering program was awarded the state-level key program; Automation program, Measurement & Control Technology and Apparatus program, and Electric Engineering and Automation program have been entitled as the key-constructed programs; the Measurement & Control Technology and Apparatus program was awarded the title of Provincial Famous Program

The School takes an active part in academic exchanges in the meantime strengthening and improving the quality of undergraduate and postgraduate teaching. Many outstanding international scholars and experts are invited to give lectures and to participate in joint research at the School, which has widened its academic horizons, raised the academic level of the students and faculty and broadened the academic influence of the School.
