School of Power and Energy

The history of the School reflects its tradition as a center of excellence for education and research in aeroengine. The School was originally started as the Department of Aeroengine in 1952 by merging the three aeroengine programs from Nanjing University, Zhejiang University, and Shanghai Jiaotong University. Later in 1970 the Aeronautical Engineering Department of Harbin Engineering College merged into the department. In 2003, the Department was renamed the School of Power and Energy. The departments involved are Aeroengine Engineering, Thermal Power Engineering, and Power Plant Control Engineering.

Currently, the School has 83 faculty and staff members, of which there are one member of the Chinese Academy of Engineering and 19 professors. The School has a total enrollment of 959 students, including 660 undergraduates, 214 postgraduates and 85 PhD candidates.

The research strength of the School is among the several best schools of NPU. Its main fields include: Aeroengine Structure and Intensity, Aeroengine Theory, Aeroengine Compressor, Mini-turbojet, New Conception Engine and Combustion, Thermal Engineering Information Processing, Aeroengine Fault Diagnosis, Heat Energy and Thermal Transmission, Environmental Engineering, Dynamic Control, and Industry Process Autoimmunization.

The scientific research of the School has developed rapidly during the Ninth and Tenth Five-year Plan. During this period, the School has undertaken more than 470 national projects. In recent years, 51 research productions have been granted the awards for scientific and technological progress, and more than 890 papers have been published in core periodicals at home and aboard. Most of those researches have gained international prominence.

The School has achieved great accomplishments on the following ten fields:
High performance compressor Design
Aerospace Propulsion Device Heat Transfer and Cooling Technology
Multi-Functional Rotating Test Rig
Pulse Detonation Engine Research
Condition Monitoring and Fault Diagnosis System for Rotating Machinery
Digital Control Technology of Aeroengine
The Investigation of Scramjet
Thermal Engineering Information Processing
Research Section of Gas Turbine Engine Fatigue Life & Reliability

The Presentation of Microturbojet Engine

The School has strong collaborative research links with universities, institutes and companies in USA, Germany, UK, France and Japan. In recent years, the School has undertaken eight joint projects with Rolls-Royce Ltd, and United Technologies Corporation. It has established partnership with the Honeywell International, signed the academic agreement with SNECMA, and received ten students from TU Berlin.
The School has also established three joint research institutes:
The Sino-Russian Research Center of Airworthiness was jointly founded with Russian CIAM.
The Sino-German Joint Institute of Monitoring and Control of Rotating Machinery and Wind Turbine was established with TU Berlin.

The Aerodynamics and Heat Transfer University Technology Partnership was developed with Rolls-Royce Ltd, UK and Oxford University.
