Founded in 2002 by merging the former Department of Mechanical Engineering and the Department of Aircraft Manufacturing Engineering, the School of Mechatronics is one of the largest and most successful in NPU. With its remarkably broad spectrum of disciplines, it offers excellent opportunities and exceptional environment for research and education. The departments involved are Aeronautics & Astronautics Manufacturing Engineering, Mechanical Engineering and Automation, Biomedical Engineering, Industrial Engineering, and Industrial Design.

 
   
 

The School has incorporated a team of renowned experts in Mechanical Engineering and has formed a team of faculty members who are excellent both in education and in academic research. Currently, there are 135 faculty members in the School including 34 full professors, 66 associate professors and senior engineers and one Yangze River Scholar. The School has a total enrollment of over 2948 full-time students, among which there are 1672 undergraduate students, 907 graduate students and 369 Ph. D. candidates.

The School is home to two laboratories: the MENS/NEMS Laboratory, and the Key Laboratory of Contemporary Design and Integrated Manufacturing Technology.
The MENS/NEMS Laboratory is at the forefront of the research in MEMS Integrated Design, Micro Smart Structure & Smart Skin, Micro-system Fabrication, Applied Micro System, and the Nems and Nano-measuring Technology.

The Contemporary Design and Integrated Manufacturing Technology Laboratory is a key laboratory by the Chinese Ministry of Education. It focuses on the research in the fields of Industry Design & Modern Product Creative Design, Virtual Design/Manufacturing & Concurrent Engineering, CAE & Synthesize Optimize, Modern Techniques Design & Manufacturing Information Management, Quick Response Manufacturing, and Contemporary Integrated Manufacturing & Project Management.

Significant contributions have been made in areas as diverse as manufacturing, design, automation, management, and biomedicine. Since 2002, the School has earned 11 scientific research awards at the national levels, and 17 awards at the provincial levels.

 
 

 
 

The School enjoys strong relations with universities, institutes and industries in Europe, USA, France. It is active and deeply involved in the collaborative EU programs. It has successfully applied two EU projects together with the University of Strathclyde, the University of Technology of Troyes, and Demark Technology University.
