School of Materials Science

Founded in1956, the School of Materials Science is one of the greatest strengths of NPU. The renowned tradition of teaching and research in materials science dates back to the foundation of the School and continues to the present day. It is committed to staying at the forefront of educational and intellectual development. It provides a particularly exciting environment in which to study for a higher degree and to promote the research in materials science. The School has three departments offering three undergraduate programs. The research is conducted in seven main fields.

The School has a faculty team with rich experiences both in teaching and research. Currently, the School has 129 faculty and staff members, of which there are 39 professors (including one academician of Chinese Academy of Science, three academicians of Chinese Academy of Engineering, three Yangze River scholars, five winners of the State Fund for Outstanding Youth and three excellent young teachers awarded by the Chinese Ministry of Education), and 54 associate professors. The School has appointed over 20 honorary and consultant professors from abroad, and more than 30 part-time Chinese professors.

Since its foundation, more than ten thousand students have graduated from the School including 700 postgraduates and 230 Ph.D. students, of which fifteen Ph.D. students have obtained the Humboldt Research Fellowship. Among its graduates, four have become members of the Chinese Academy of Science and the Chinese Academy of Engineering. At Present, there are 713 undergraduates, 430 postgraduates, 210 Ph.D. candidates, and ten post-doctors.

The research infrastructure of the School is excellence across the board, and the level of research activity is high. The School is home to two state key laboratories, one provincial key laboratory, three provincial centers for engineering technology, and two other institutes and centers to support teaching and research:
The State Key Laboratory of Solidification Processing
The Thermal Structure Composite Materials Laboratory
The Shaanxi Provincial Key Laboratory of Friction Welding Technology
The Shaanxi Provincial Engineering Research Center of Carbon/Carbon Composite Materials
The Shaanxi Provincial Engineering Research Center of Advanced Materials & Solidification Processing
The Shaanxi Provincial Engineering Research Center of Friction Welding Technology
The Xi’an Engineering Research Center of Photo-Electrical Materials
The Functional Materials Institute of NPU

Research in the School has always been conducted at the cutting edge of modern developments. The research ability of the School ranks in the top three of its kind among the Chinese universities. Since the Seventh Five-year Plan, 16 projects were awarded the State Inventory Prize and the State Prize for Scientific Progress, and 100 projects were awarded at the provincial level. At present, the School is undertaking more than 240 research projects.

The School of Material Sciences has strong collaborative research links with a number of universities, institutions and industries in Europe, the United States, Japan, and Russia. It prides itself on its international reputation. Students also benefit from academic staff passing on current international developments in their fields. Every year, there are faculty exchange programs and split Ph.D. programs with universities abroad.
