School of Natural and Applied Science

The School of Natural and Applied Science (SNAS) was founded in July 2003 as a combination of the former Department of Mathematics and Information Science, Department of Applied Physics, and Department of Chemical Engineering. SNAS consists of 3 departments and 5 institutes offering 9 programs for Bachelor’s degree, 19 programs for Master’s degree and 6 programs for Ph.D. degree, among which the Ph. D. program of Materials Physics and Chemistry is officially evaluated as one of the State Key Disciplines. In SNAS, the concept of combining science with technology and combining theory with practice is emphasized, forming an effective operation mechanism of “scientific research promoting specialty teaching and specialty teaching facilitating scientific research in turn”. SNAS provides the philosophical and methodological background to our work and, importantly, promotes communication and public understanding of science. In the future, SNAS is determined to grasp the golden historical opportunity of education development and the large-scale development in the west of China, so as to build SNAS a school that is pioneering in the west of China, first class in China and well-known in the world.

The school is staffed with an excellent faculty of 177 members, who have high academic levels, and rich experience in teaching and research, including one academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, 44 professors (including 19 Ph. D. supervisors), 53 associate professors (or senior engineers), and 40 lecturers (or engineers). The dean of the school, Prof. Bingbo Wei, is a specially appointed professor by Changjiang Scholars Rewarding Program, a winner of Chinese National Award for Distinguished Young Scientists, and an electee of Chinese National Advanced Researcher.

At present, there are more than 1400 undergraduates and more than 500 graduates studying in SNAS. They are insistently guided to aim at “excellent personality, excellent ability and excellent health” and to concentrate on specialty study and training. In the past several years, more than 3000 students have finished their education in SNAS and become advanced professionals in various fields. They are highly and favorably approved.

SNAS takes great pride in its research. At present, it undertakes more than 100 research projects at the national or provincial level, among which some are funded by the National Natural Science Foundation, 863 High Technology Program, and 921 Project. Nearly 300 papers were published in journals well known at home and abroad, among which near 130 are indexed by SCI, EI and ISTP. The scientific achievements of SNAS have won 15 official awards on or above provincial and ministerial levels, and 8 patent grants. In 2003, the research project of “High undercooling and rapid crystal growth of liquid metals” accomplished by Prof. Bingbo Wei’s group won the second prize of the Chinese National Natural Science Award.

Importance is also attached to international academic cooperation and exchange. SNAS has strong collaborative research links with global partners. International cooperation relations have been established with universities and institutes in USA, Germany, UK, France, Japan, Switzerland, Netherlands, Canada, Hong Kong and other countries, and many faculty members and graduates of SNAS are conducting cooperative research abroad. More than 65 have been to SNAS for academic exchange. Students benefit from academic staff passing on current developments in their fields.
