The School of Computer Sciences and Engineering dates back to 1958 when the Computer Science subject was founded at NPU. In 1970, the Computer Science Teaching and Research Section joined the subject. In 1981 Computer Science and Engineering became a separate department expanding over years to reach its present School in 2002.

The School is staffed with 97 faculty members including one member of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, 19 full professors, and 37 associate professors who teach and conduct research in computer science and engineering.

The School has attained prominent research accomplishments. During the Ninth Five-year-Plan (1996-2000), the School undertook two projects of National Natural Science Foundation, two projects of National Program 863, and 12 other research projects with a total research fund of eight million RMB. In addition, the faculty has been entrusted eight projects of various provincial foundations. The School has strong relationship with companies and industries home and abroad, and thus a large group of teachers are pioneering in the sphere of computer science and exploring new frontiers of computer technology.

The School has developed cooperative programs with the University of Sydney, the Vrije Universiteit Brussel, University of Surrey, IBM, NEC, and Platform Software.
